The Theory of Learning

By: David Korn

Learning theory is a branch of education that focuses on how people learn. The theory of learning encompasses three categories with different approaches. These approaches include cognitive, behavioral, and constructivist. There are many different ways to learn, but a combination of these learning methods is most suitable.

The cognitive approach to learning involves the mind. Memory, information processing, and recognition are part of the learning process. The mind plays a fundamental role in learning theory and receiving input can lead to output. Since learning is an ongoing process, the mind always likes input. The mind always takes in information and processes it. Then it stores the information for later use.

The behavioral approach to learning involves socialization and the environment. We all develop responses, whether conditioned or automatic. We learn responses from our environment at a very early age. Therefore, this shapes how we respond to stimuli. As we develop our learning methodologies, we come to the realization of the reward and punishment system. If we perform a negative behavior, we can get punished. If we perform a positive behavior, we can get rewarded. Much of our behaviors in life will stem around this principle, particularly when it comes to pleasure.

The constructivist approach to learning involves the formulation of ideas, creativity, and conceptualization. Many times we draw upon past experiences to create new things. We also use experience to solve problems. Idea gathering and creativity can be seen as a constructive way to spend one’s time. Conceptualizing something usually involves more complex ideas and knowledge. Some people find certain things to be easily conceptualized while others may find it difficult. Improving and understanding concepts can yield higher learning.

Learning theory involves many aspects since we can all learn in different ways. We can also learn in a combination of ways using visualization, touch, and our other senses. Most importantly, being an active learner is what contributes to our knowledge. Trying to discover how you learn best and working on the areas you lack can help you to become a better learner. Learning can be fun and its rewards can far outweigh other endeavors in life.
