The Path to Enlightenment

By: David Korn

Enlightenment means many different things. Spiritually speaking, many people wish to pursue a path to enlightenment. Many wonder what it means to be enlightened. Well, enlightenment can mean something as simple as obtaining a solution from solving a problem or it can mean something hard to grasp such as spiritual gains. Even when we acquire new knowledge, many times there is more to be found.

Simply solving a solution to a problem or acquiring a new piece of information can make someone enlightened. Many experts in their field know solutions to many different problems. Therefore, they have attained a level of enlightenment in their field. Their knowledge trumps many and they are often looked up to. However, they don’t stop learning just like the rest of us. There may be different degrees of enlightenment, which is all based on perception.

Enlightenment is usually seen as an end to the means. To many, it means they have achieved a final attainment in whatever they are seeking. This may be truth, realization, understanding, and so on. To be fully enlightened, one must be confident that these things don’t change. Any little change can challenge the level of enlightenment and they will have to further enlighten themselves. As a result, enlightenment can be seen as a spiritual path.

Spiritual enlightenment is usually associated with having freedom from our thoughts. Many individuals who wish to attain this come to many realizations. This can include that thoughts are fleeting moments in time, every moment is unique, thoughts cause feelings, thoughts and feelings are impermanent, desire leads to suffering, and so on. With all of these realizations and much more, individuals can become enlightened. Spiritual enlightenment can also mean divinity. Many individuals seek or try to understand things that are much greater than us.

A basic presumption of enlightenment is that it can mean different things to different people. It is hard to refute someone who claims they are enlightened. Just the fact that we are alive can mean that we are enlightened about the world and our universe around us, simply because we know what life is like. Like many other things, a lot has to do with philosophy. Spiritual paths are usually ongoing and sticking to a path is what is noble about it. Becoming enlightened is certainly a goal to have. Once you do, perhaps you won’t need to seek for more answers.
