Self-Regulation By: David Korn
Physically we need regulation. Our body is always sending us signals for thirst, hunger, sleep, and so on. Responding to our body’s needs and wants is important for self-regulation. Paying attention to our physical health is vital for survival. Our body is in a constant need for homeostasis or balance. Neglecting certain signals can cause our body to become imbalanced. Therefore, we should place great importance on regulating our physical health. Just like physical health, it is important to regulate mental health as well. Much like with physical signals, our minds send us signals in response to many things. Sometimes the mind will send us responses in times of distress. Therefore, it is important to regulate these signals to return to normal. Any upset to this balance will cause us to become aware of them. Self-regulating and taking care of our mental health is needed to achieve a balance. Adapting to external events is needed for regulation as well. Sometimes our lives can get chaotic and overwhelming. Finding ways to organize and deal with external events and situations is important for regulating ourselves. Many skills can be acquired in doing so. This includes time management, organizational skills, adaptation techniques, and so on. Responding to our environment or external stimuli is necessary for our regulation. Regulation becomes difficult when we are very young. But, as we age and mature, we get a better sense of how to regulate ourselves. Incorporating life experiences, learned skills, knowledge, and so on is good for self-regulation. Knowing how to adapt to a situation is important for well-being. As always, even if we have difficulty with regulating ourselves, there is always help available. |
