Scrabble Tips and Strategies

By: David Korn

Scrabble is one of the most played games in the world. People from all walks of life play this game for the intellect, strategy, and fun it provides. You can learn so many new words from this game alone. We all start as beginners at one time or another. But, many have difficulty advancing to the higher levels. There are a few basic tips that will help improve your game dramatically if you are willing to try.

The one biggest component that will increase your score is learning all the two letter words. These are extremely important to know since you can create multiple word strings. In addition, these words can be used as hooks for larger words, such as bingos. There are many lists of these words in books and on the internet. I would advise to memorize them as much as you can.

Prefixes and suffixes are important to know for the creation of large words. Try to learn as many of these as possible. Some include re-, de-, un-, be-, -er, -ier, -iest, and –ing. It will be much easier to formulate words, such as bingos, by knowing many prefixes and suffixes.

Hooks are another aspect of the game that can be overlooked. Hooks are additions to words that are already on the board. Examples include o-give, o-vine, a-mice, bred-e, person-a, retina-e, and so on. When the board gets jammed, knowing many hooks, particularly obscure ones, can help you to open up the board and score big points.

Utilizing the bonus tiles can generate a massive amount of points. For instance, placing the letter X on a double or triple letter twice can boost your score. The idea is to use high scoring letters twice on these bonus tiles by forming multiple connecting words. Of course, memorizing as many three, four, five, and six letter words will come in handy in addition to the bingo words.

Rack management can be the key between winning and losing. Make sure you have a steady and even flow of consonants and vowels throughout the game. Also, memorize many words that utilize a lot of consonants or vowels in case your rack becomes one-sided. Knowing when to give up a slightly higher play for a better rack the following turn can also improve game performance.

Scrabble can be an extremely fun and productive game. It is also a great way to socialize with people you know. It is no wonder that it continues to be the world’s # 1 word game. I hope this article will help you to become a better Scrabble player!
