Public Speaking Skills By: David Korn
When giving a speech, realize that you cannot control the behavior of the audience. They can be talking, laughing, moving, and much more. This will allow you to relax knowing that you are moving with the flow. Everyone will have negative or positive thoughts about your speech. Don’t worry so much about other’s thinking. Focus on achieving what you want to in your speech. The audience only needs a few good points for a speech to be successful. Adding some humor can also help ease the tension for you and the audience. Speaking in a positive light and showing that you care will give the audience a good impression of you. You don’t have to be brilliant, accomplished, or a comedian to be a successful public speaker. A little bit can go a long way. When intense emotions, such as anxiety, arise in the midst of a speech, it is best to focus on the present. Focus on your words and stay grounded when you start to feel overwhelmed. If someone in the audience makes things difficult for you, answer politely at all times. You can even throw in some humor such as “We have a toughie in here folks” to try to dissuade the offender. Practicing a speech a few times extemporaneously (on the spot) can help you prepare. Public speaking is usually a part of our lives, particularly at a career. Learning some of these techniques will help you to overcome the fear of public speaking. Like with anything else, practice makes perfect. |
