Overcome Fear of Failure

By: David Korn

Overcoming the fear of failure can be an obstacle for many people. There are several constructive ways to overcome the fear of failure. Many people are afraid of failure due to perceived consequences. In reality, failure is not really so bad and can even lead to success. Changing our thoughts, attitudes, and perceptions towards failure can help us to overcome it. By doing so, we can be more willing to take on greater challenges.

Many times, society can put a lot of pressure on us to succeed. Therefore, failure is seen as something unacceptable. As a result, we develop a fear of failure as time persists. Many of these learned behaviors are unrealistic and can cause us grief. It is not always bad to fail at something. Usually, nothing really bad happens as a result. You can even use it as a learning experience to try to prevent future failures.

Since we are imperfect individuals, failing at something is to be expected. It is not realistic to think that we can succeed at everything. There are way too many things to learn and many times we are newcomers at things. As a result, we may fail a few times before we are able to succeed. Knowing this ahead of time and the realization that we all make mistakes, we can lessen the fear of failure.

One of the best ways to overcome the fear of failure is to take action. Be open to trying new things or repeat good behaviors over time. Try not to think about failing, but instead see everything as a small success. Many times we all have different perceptions of failure. One failure may seem like a success to another. Therefore, it may all be relative. But, hardly anything really bad can happen, with some exception in more high risk areas.

Failure is part of human nature. There will be times where we succeed and there will be times where we fail. There is nothing wrong with either and we all learn as we experience new things. Failure in high risk occupations can be minimized with practice, experience, and confidence. Having a backup plan is also a good idea in those cases. Overall, failure can certainly be turned into success with some practice and dedication.
