Organizing Your Home

By: David Korn

Organizing your home can seem like a major obstacle. Many people hire cleaners to perform the task. However, there are some easy ways to keep your home in check. I will provide a breakdown of organizing your home, room by room.

Living Room: The living room is usually the focal point of the home. This room is what most guests see first when entering a house. Therefore, it is important to keep a tidy atmosphere. Having a centerpiece, such as a fireplace, television or coffee table can act as the focus of the room. You can work your way around this centerpiece with other pieces of furniture. This may include a sofa, lounge chair, and an entertainment set. If you like to have a lot of items lying around, it is a good idea to get furniture items that have built-in storage. Make sure the furniture items are spread apart at least a few feet to maneuver around.

Kitchen: This room can be one of the messiest places in the home. Making sure you clean the kitchen often is important. Also, make sure there is easy access and things are in reach. Utilizing the cabinets and putting the same items together will help. You can use the cabinet underneath the sink for the cleaning items. In the draws, keep the utensils in a utensil tray and the dishes stacked together by their size. If necessary, you can add racks to the walls for extra space.

Dining Room: This is another room that can get very messy. The dining table should be the main focus of the room. The table and chairs should be the only furniture items that are in the dining room, unless you have some walking space for tall furniture. On the table, you can put plates with folded napkins adjacent to the seats. Having a centerpiece in the middle of the table can add a nice touch. This may include a plant, arts and crafts item, and others.

Master Bedroom: The master bedroom can be one of the most important rooms. This is a place where you can relax and free yourself from daily obstacles. Therefore, making sure you have no clutter is even more important. The bed is usually the focal point of the master bedroom. Having a drawer by the wall with walking space is fine. If you read in this room, you can utilize a magazine rack to place the items. The closet can be another obstacle for many people. Putting your clothes on clothes hangers can be helpful. Purchasing storage items such as file cabinets, moving drawers, and so on can help save space and clutter.

Regular Bedroom: A regular bedroom basically follows the same format as the master bedroom. However, the bed may not necessarily be the centerpiece of the room. Many times, the bed is placed next to a wall. In this case, it is best to leave the center empty for walking space. Placing the furniture items along the side of the room would complement the bed. Using compartments and draws as storage devices will help keep clutter away. Folding and stacking your clothes in drawers will also lessen clutter.

Bathroom: Tons of clutter can lead us astray in the bathroom. Utilize the cabinets as much as you can. Place similar items together so you can find them easily. Only place necessary items near the sink such as soap, toothpaste, and a few other things. The same applies to the bathtub or shower. Wall racks can be useful for storing items.

Home Office: Usually the desk is the centerpiece of a home office. Having one or two chairs adjacent to the desk can add to the look. On the edges of the room, a tall plant or cabinet can be displayed. It is important to keep your desk empty. You can get a paper tray to hold documents, pen holders, a calendar, and a rolodex to keep on top of the desk. Otherwise, except for a computer, it is best to leave yourself writing room. In the draws, keeping likewise items together is useful. You want to make it such that you can find important items.

Garage: The garage, for many homes, can be a disaster. Some people use the entire garage as a storage place. If this is the case, organization is crucial. Placing items in boxes, cabinets, draws, tool chests and other storage devices would greatly help. The idea is to make sure there is enough walking room in the case of an emergency. Many use the garage to store their cars. If this is the case, make sure the car is turned off. No one wants to have fumes from the car seep out and cause a hazard to the home.

Porch/Patio: The fewer items you have for the porch and patio, the better. A few chairs and a table is all that is really needed. Walking space is important since guests tend to sit in the porch or patio. Decorating the table can add to the look. Some like to use awnings to block out the sun as well.

Backyard: The backyard should mostly be empty so the lawnmower can do its job. Some like to keep a playhouse for children. In addition, some keep swimming pools in the backyard. Making sure items that lay around are put away can prevent them from getting lost.

Organizing the home is not as hard as it seems. A little bit of effort in all of the different rooms will begin to add up. If it seems too much at once, breaking tasks in smaller parts can lessen the amount. Then you can have something to show off to fellow guests and newcomers.
