How to Stay Motivated

By: David Korn

One of the biggest obstacles we face is how to motivate ourselves. Everyone has their own unique way of doing so, but there are many ways to stay motivated. Humans are generally built around a reward system. We learn from very young that behaviors can contribute to rewards. Creating a reward for oneself can prove to be a big motivator. One example can be going through college to earn a degree. Many struggle while taking classes and may want to quit. The main motivator in this case would be the degree since that is what helps you get a job. Thinking that a task can yield a reward at the end will help you achieve that goal.

Many ask the question “What is in it for me?” We even ask that question when volunteering our time, for example. Therefore, always keep in mind that whatever you do will benefit you in some way. If you decide to read a book, you know that it will help you to gain knowledge. Then you can use that knowledge for good purposes. This creates a spider web of infinite opportunities.

Getting motivated and staying motivated are often major challenges in life. Much like interest, motivations change over time and can affect our activities. Humans need sufficient motivation for them to perform tasks. There are many ways to motivate ourselves. The key is to determine what motivators will benefit us according to our individual preferences.

Motivation correlates to interest quite so. The idea is to also look for good things that will reward you from an activity. Practically any activity you perform offers some sort of good reward. Seek out the good in the activity and you shall find some motivation. In addition, adding some fun and excitement to an endeavor will make it easier for you to follow through.
