How to Negotiate

By: David Korn

Negotiating with others is a skill that can be handy in life. Learning how to negotiate requires practice and patience. There will be many situations in which you are inclined to negotiate with others. Knowing how to negotiate in these particular circumstances can yield positive results. There are a few ways to negotiate well, and adapting to that situation will be important.

When negotiating, it is important to do so in a non-confrontational way. Being courteous, respectful, and willing to listen will help ease the atmosphere. It is important not to blame or attack the other individual if you need to get your way. Understand that when dealing with someone else, you may or may not get what you want. But, being polite and respectful will increase your chances at closing the deal.

Communication will also be important when negotiating with others. Stating your needs clearly and concisely will help them to understand your perspective. Also, offering to listen to their needs and wants will help as well. Not getting too emotional and keeping your tone balanced will help the negotiation process.

When the other person becomes very tough, bargaining can be of assistance. You can offer to lower the terms to make the other happy. If the other person is still unwilling, even after lowering, then they are probably not serious in the first place. Negotiating can be like a give and take. You can offer to give up something in order to achieve gains with the other, if the situation warrants it.

Negotiating can be a time consuming process. Knowing the personality of the other, the correct time to speak, and the situation involved during negotiation will lessen the possible aggravation that may ensue. The idea is to make the process as smooth and as easy as possible for the parties involved. Once a negotiation becomes successful, the likelihood of future successes will increase.
