Having a Superiority Complex

By: David Korn

It is good to have high self-esteem or self-worth. However, if you take it to the next level and act superior to others, they will begin to dislike you. This may include showing you are smarter, better, more talented, and so on. It may be fine to do so when the situation warrants it, but if you act blatantly superior on a regular basis, it can stir trouble.

Understand that no human is really better than one another. We all have different traits, talents, skills, and personalities. In many cases, no matter how good you are at something, there is usually someone better. Surrendering to this idea makes you accept that we are all capable of achieving greatness.

Having a superiority complex may mean that you have experienced negative situations in the past. Many people who experience post traumatic stress have this type of personality. If this is the case, it is best to work through the thoughts that are causing these feelings. Feeling and being superior can be a way to cover up the trauma. However, this will have a negative impact on others.

Many relationships suffer as a result of having a superiority complex. It is fine to display self-confidence, but taking it too far will result in dislike from others. Much like being competitive, being superior can go hand in hand. Learning ways to lessen the impact on others will prove useful in letting others know we are the same in many ways.
