Gaining Willpower By: David Korn
Exercising willpower at first can be difficult if you don’t exert it often. The idea is to practice exerting your will over time. Many times we don’t want to do something. Try to do the things you dislike and monitor your negative thoughts as you go through the activity or experience. Obviously, don’t do things that will cause harm to yourself or others. The idea is to do tasks that you may dislike such as work, studying, organizing, and so on to exercise your willpower. Learning how to make decisions is good for gaining willpower. Behind decisions, there is usually determination. Become very determined to accomplish the goals you want. Being indecisive can make it difficult to exert willpower. Therefore, decision making will help you to decide what is right for the situation. Knowing when to resist is also another way in gaining willpower. Sometimes we get pushed or forced to do something that serves no benefit. Learning to say no or divert irrelevant situations is important. The idea is to not be afraid to let other people down. Many people are understanding when it comes to your time. If they aren’t, then it is best to reevaluate your relationship with them. When it comes to willpower, a lot of discipline is needed. With proper training of performing tasks you don’t like, it will become easier over time. There are drawbacks where you will feel unable to do something. That can be fine at times, but it is good to weight the pros and cons of making a decision or not. With practice and dedication, your willpower can become enhanced and serve you well. |
