Formulating Beliefs

By: David Korn

As humans, we all have the ability to believe. Formulating beliefs is many times a complex pursuit that involves many areas of ourselves. Beliefs can help us as well as go against us. Therefore, it is important to create beliefs that are constructive to our lives. Everyone will have different beliefs and at times we will have collective beliefs. Our individuality can be expressed through our beliefs as time goes on.

Perceived notions can rise towards belief. Sometimes we see something and we automatically believe it. This can be based on intelligence, past experiences, or other things. It is important to understand that these beliefs may not necessarily be true. They may, however, be your truth. Therefore, coming up with substantial evidence to believe in something is a good idea.

Evidence is very important in formulating beliefs. This may be empirical, logical, deductive, and on and on. When you are having difficulty believing something, stack up the evidence to see if it holds true. Sometimes our minds have trouble believing unless we attack the belief at many different angles. Once you gather enough evidence, you can decide if your belief is true to you.

When it comes to beliefs, many times we have self-doubt or disbelief. This is understandable as skepticism is built into us for defensive purposes. If there isn’t enough clear evidence, then it is feasible to have disbelief towards something. Over time, this belief may change as new evidence presents itself. The way to formulate beliefs from disbelief is through enough assurance. We as humans like to be reassured. Therefore, it makes sense that beliefs can form this way.

Sometimes our beliefs can be destructive. In the case of mental disturbance, some have these damaging beliefs that prevent them from functioning well. Therefore, it is important to challenge these beliefs to come up with new ones. Many times we have some belief towards something. This can be a little difficult for the mind since anxiety and confusion can arise unless the belief is completely believable. Having the ability to believe can steer us in the right direction once we have the knowledge to do so.
