Defragmenting Your Computer

By: David Korn

Defragmentation is a term that seems a bit scary to many people. Many have no idea what it means or what it can do for your computer. Your computer has a way of organizing information. Every time you save or delete files, download or uninstall programs, and other menial tasks, your computer fragments the files and information on your hard drive. As a result, this will eventually slow down the computer as it looks for these bits of scattered information.

Running the defragment program on a regular basis will speed up your computer. This program will help better organize the hard drive. To do a defragmentation, go to your start menu, program files, accessories, system tools, and to the disk defragmenter. If necessary, you can also type in “defragment” in the search section of your start menu if you are unable to find it.

The best time to defragment your computer is to click on the analyze button within the program. This will notify you if you need to perform one or not. Only perform one when it recommends doing so. This should be checked every 1-3 months or so.

Perfoming this task will help your computer run smoothly. Many people forget or disregard this important tool. Just like organizing your home or office, the computer needs a way to organize itself. Defragmentation is one of the best ways to do that.
