Dealing with Regret

By: David Korn

How often in life do we regret something from the past? Learning to let go and having the knowledge that we cannot change things from the past is important. Many people like to reminisce on past events. This may lead them to think they could have done something differently. However, when we think in the past, our minds tend to distort our thoughts.

The thoughts in our minds of the past are not the actual event occurring, but rather a memory of it. Also, you can change things to a certain extent in the present. If a past incident is causing you regret, work on ways to make the ongoing incident improve or prevent similar occurrences from happening.

It is helpful to realize that we cannot change or take back the past. Sure, maybe one day humans can figure out how to time travel. But, even then it may cause forks in the timeline and we may still be unable to change the past. In current day reality, we know that it is over. Accepting that can help you attain peace from within.

Almost everyone has regrets of some kind. We can try to fix what has been done or learn from our mistakes and move onward. Knowing that many things aren’t under our control and things do happen are a good way of dealing with regret. In time, most things usually get better.
