Dealing with Procrastination

By: David Korn

In life, procrastination is usually unavoidable. It seems to be built into our psychology and physiology. This can spill over into daily life including academics, socializing, work and home life, and more. Daily events such as being too busy, demands from others, time itself and so on can all contribute to procrastinating. There are many ways to minimize such a potentially destructive force.

Many times we find tasks to be difficult or overwhelming. This can lead to delaying the task for extended periods of time. To alleviate this, it is a good idea to break tasks into smaller parts. Doing some research about the particular task may also prove useful. Always be ready to ask for help when needed. If you are working on projects, you can ask trusted ones for their opinion. Be prepared to make mistakes along the way and then work on correcting them.

There are some of us who are perfectionists. It is a very hard habit to break and can be ingrained into our personality. Thinking that you have to be perfect on what you embark upon can lead to procrastination. The idea is to accept the reality that perfectionism is not always possible. Praising yourself and telling yourself that your work is near perfect can be good enough. Making sure you look for errors closely can also reassure that you are near perfect.

Time sometimes seems to be the enemy. We feel that we don’t have enough time to complete the task. The best way to take care of this difficulty is through prioritization. Labeling activities as either low or high priority can assist you in managing your time. In addition, replacing your negative thoughts with positive ones until they become your way of thinking is something to work on.
