Controlling Anger

By: David Korn

Anger can be one of the most destructive emotions. It can cause all sorts of social and health problems. Anger usually stems from fear and lack of control. When we have insufficient control over our situation or environment, anger can arise. In addition, when we feel that bad things happen to us, we get angry. Of course, our thinking towards situations will determine what emotions we will feel and this can include anger.

An effective way in dealing with anger is learning to be more understanding. Realize that many things aren’t people’s fault. Communicating to others can help to diminish misunderstandings which can lead to anger. Don’t be afraid to express yourself, even if you do feel a little anger. It is not wise to yell, but to talk about what is bothering you. If you start to yell and let the anger get worse, it will most likely impair your judgment.

Relaxation techniques and some humor can also go a long way in mitigating your anger. Taking some deep breaths or walking away from the situation may give you time to gather your thoughts. In many cases, we later realize that our anger was silly. As a result, we can laugh it off with others. These things do happen and we sometimes act on emotional impulse.

Anger can be a destructive emotion for our well-being and physical health. Since most things are beyond our control, anger can be lessened by this realization. Others will be more appreciative if you can keep your cool during a rough situation. In general, the less anger you have, the more peaceful you can be.
