Become a Better Reader

By: David Korn

Learning how to become a better reader should be a priority in our lives. Acquiring reading skills is a time endeavor and we learn as we read more. Many people wish to enhance their reading comprehension, fluency, and speed. This will not only help them in the academic field, but also in their lives. Reading, like with almost everything else, requires a lot of practice to improve.

Reading comprehension is the understanding of words and sentences and how they fit within the excerpt. To gain a better understanding, expanding your knowledge is important. It is best to learn about many different things and look up difficult words in the dictionary. Some people like to use a highlighter to clarify major points. In addition, reading a passage over multiple times while stopping to think at times will help with reading comprehension.

Everyone has a different level of reading fluency. Some prefer to read slowly and some more quickly. This usually becomes a habit over time. If you feel that your reading speed is too slow, try to read a passage over several times until your speed increases. If your reading speed is very high, try to focus more on certain passages to capture the idea better. There is no correct speed, so varying the speed at which you read can help to achieve desirable levels.

Being in a good environment is important for reading. Many people prefer the quiet in order to read. Some can zone out distractions and manage to read normally. In addition, some like to be read to and reading to others can be beneficial as well. Reading together in groups is also a good idea. That way everyone can contribute and share their ideas.

One of the best ways to become a better reader and improve reading skills is to read as often as you can. Try to read at least everyday and really focus on the meaning of the text. In addition, read a passage over several times to improve your comprehension. You can practice with other people to get their points of view about the passage. Improving your reading skills can add a lot of value to your life.
