Backup Your Data

By: David Korn

I would like to explain the importance of backing up your data on the computer. Statistics show that the majority of people don’t backup often enough. We usually forget to backup, are too busy, or feel it is too tedious. However, learning to backup your data on a regular basis can save you a lot of trouble.

There are a variety of good products that you can use for backing up your data. Back in the old days, the floppy disk was the most popular form of backup. They were portable, offered enough space for documents, and accessible on practically any computer. Since the advance of technology, the floppy disk is quickly phasing out.

The compact disc (CD) became a popular way to backup your data after the floppy disk. A compact disc can hold approximately 700 megabytes of data. That is a substantial increase in storage capacity. Many industries adopted the use of the compact disc for distribution. The compact disc is still a good way to backup your data along with the digital versatile disc (DVD). A digital versatile disc can store approximately 4 gigabytes of space. The next possible storage device in the near future will be the blu-ray disc. That can hold anywhere from 25 to 50 gigabytes of space.

Flash drives have gained a lot of popularity due to their size, portability, and compatibility. Flash drives utilize a Universal Serial Bus (USB). This allows fast access and no burning necessary. A flash drive’s expected life ranges from a few years to several decades or longer, much like the compact and digital versatile discs.

The external hard drive offers a massive amount of storage space for larger capacities. These seem to be the most reliable, according to most people. As technology improves, current devices will get better. In addition, newer devices will become more available. They will be faster, more reliable, and cost effective.

I would suggest backing up your data at least once a week. This is providing that you are backing up personal items such as photographs, music, video, and so on. For documents and work related, or other important items, backing up at least once a day is suitable. In some cases, backing up several times a day and even more can help save data loss in the event of an accident.
